We’re more than a week into September, and most of us are settling back into town for the fall. In case you’ve been busy unpacking your summer suitcase {sigh} and clinging on to what’s left of the sunshine, we’ve rounded up the latest news to keep you in the loop. Here’s this week’s update for Hoboken and Jersey City.
Jersey Cares Aims to Transform 9/11 Into a Day of Service
Transforming 9/11 into a day of “unity, empathy and service” is the goal of Jersey Cares, which will be hosting their annual 9/11 Day of Service to pay a positive tribute to those lost and injured on September 11th, 2001. On Saturday, September 9, 400+ Jersey Cares volunteers will come together to revitalize an underserved high school in Jersey City. Projects may include revitalization of the school’s 9/11 Memorial, brightening school walls with inspirational murals, landscaping and trash pickup, and more.
Local Girl Scouts Collaborate to Create Hoboken History App
Three Hoboken girl scouts are pursuing their Girl Scout Silver Award {the 2nd highest award}, which can be achieved by identifying a community issue then conceiving and building a project around it. Fostering an understanding of community is the issue that these girls decided to tackle, and they’re doing so by organizing local history and cultural walking tours. They researched and developed the tours and found someone to create an iPhone app for it. After months of research and collaborating with the Hoboken Historical Museum, the app has launched nationally on the Apple app store. New tours and content will be added over time, but you can find the app here.
Porter Collins Closes Abruptly
Earlier this week, hMAG broke the story that Porter Collins, a newly opened uptown restaurant, has permanently closed. Porter Collins was the newest addition to the Pino Hospitality line of restaurants including Bin 14 and Anthony David’s, thought both of those establishments are still flourishing. Anthony and Liz Pino sought out to bring fine dining and upscale nightlight to the uptown area of Hoboken. A statement from Pino Hospitality stated, “We are grateful for your support. It was a pleasure to serve you. The Pino Hospitality team will continue to welcome you to Anthony David’s and Bin 14, and to provide expert event planning through AD Catering|Events.”
First Annual Hoboken Oyster Social Coming to Hoboken
Oyster Week New York is expanding into New Jersey to host the “First Annual Hoboken Oyster Social.” It’s being held at Dozzino and the ticket price includes oysters, pizza, beer and wine. The event will showcase some of New Jersey’s finest oysters and oyster growers for up to 50 guests. Some of the oysters will even be shucked and served by the men and women who grew them. Additionally, they’ll be screening The Oyster Farmers, a film about the NJ Oyster Revival and some of the men and women involved in that.
Annual 9/11 Memorial Service to Take Place on Pier A
Tomorrow marks sixteen years since the September 11th attacks, a day that Hoboken lost 56 of its own residents — the most of any town in New Jersey. The City is hosting its annual Interfaith Memorial Service which will take place at 6PM on Pier A, next to the recently completed Hoboken 9/11 Memorial in the northwest area of the park.
Charity Yoga Event to Benefit Homeless Youth
On Sunday, September 24, a charity yoga event will take place at Church of the Holy Innocents to benefit homeless youth. Brendan Gibbons and Adriana Kalova partnered with Covenant House NYC to spread the word and help raise money through this fundraiser. The Covenant House programs go beyond just the homeless shelter; they provide young people with the support they need to leave the streets and achieve independence. This year, they’re helping 13 kids to go to college on a full scholarship, but they still need funds for the basic dorms necessities. Get more info, or make a donation, by clicking here.
Large Fire Breaks Out in Jersey City
It took dozens of firefighters to fight a Jersey City fire that broke out on the corner of John F. Kennedy Blvd. and 5th Street. A chief on the scene said people were working on a car inside the garage where the fire originated. They tried to put it out themselves, but it quickly spread to the upstairs and neighboring buildings. Six people were in the apartments above, but escaped uninjured.
First Responders Compete in Charity Cook-Off
Police officers, firefighters, and EMTs gathered yesterday to compete in the Second Annual First Responders Charity Cook-Off. They served up various types of chicken, sausage, pasta, and collard green dishes, and attendees had the chance to sample those dishes and vote for their favorite entree. Part of the proceeds were donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
