It’s the last weekend of April, and we’re looking forward to all the flowers this month’s showers will hopefully bring in May. It was a busy week in the Mile Square with announcements of lots of new businesses opening in the coming months. Roig Gallery Hosts BIG Art Show

The Roig Gallery will host an art show today from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM at 51 Harrison Street — so make sure to stop by! Over 50 works by Ricardo Roig will be on display, and FYI – his gallery is closed today so that all art is available during the exhibition. Ricardo Roig is a 33-year-old locally based professional fine artist {read more about him here}. His “Mile Square Collection” depicts scenes throughout Hoboken in a unique printmaking process. Trader Joe’s Opening Confirmed

In what seems like the longest wait of all time, the official date has finally come. Trader Joe’s announced this week they will celebrate their official opening with a ceremonial lei cutting on May 19th at 9:00 AM. Celebrations will continue throughout the day with food demonstrations and giveaways. The Hoboken Trader Joe’s is located on the ground floor of The Harlow at 1350 Willow Avenue. See the full story here.

 Sephora is Coming to Hoboken

Earlier this week, the news broke that Sephora is indeed coming to Hoboken. The makeup spot will be located at 319 Washington Street in one of two retail spaces available. The development of the building is still underway. Once completed, Sephora should start their own construction later this year.

Downtown Jersey City Farmer’s Market Celebrates 10 Years {And Opens Monday!}

The Historic Downtown Farmers’ Market in Jersey City began in 2008 with less than 10 vendors — and has exploded into an amazing market with over 25 vendors serving up tasty treats from fresh fruits and vegetables to freshly baked empanadas to homemade mozzarella. Starting May 1 to December every Monday and Thursday from 4pm to 8pm, this is an event not to be missed on a twice weekly basis.

Simply Juiced to Open Second Location

Simply Juiced, one of Hoboken’s favorite vegan and green juice joints, will open their second location at 302 Main Street in Fort Lee. According to Boozy Burbs, no official opening date has been announced but a “Coming Soon” sign has been posted in the windows. The original location at 262 1st Street was opened by a core team of lifelong vegans with over 20 years of experience working in the fitness and nutrition industries. {HG Tip- if you haven’t had their Yin-Yang Chia Pudding get on that — stat!}

Hoboken Girl Helps’ Prom Prep Rally to Benefit Suits for Success

If you weren’t in the social media loop this week, then you may have missed our major prom prep rally on April 28, 2017 at Hoboken High School that benefitted Suits for Success with stylist Tiffany Piñero Style. High schoolers in Hudson County were given the opportunity to purchase dresses, shoes, accessories, and makeup for $5 and under — with all proceeds going to Suits for Success of Hudson County. Donations of dresses capped over 1000 from local residents {THANK YOU!!!!}, and dozens of girls were given the chance to purchase prom dresses and pay it forward. A win/win for all!

Citywide Cleanup in Hoboken Draws Over 600 Volunteers

The City of Hoboken planned this cleanup volunteering event which drew over 600 people on Saturday, with our Hoboken Girl Helps team making up four of the 50+ teams. Volunteers helped clean parks, paint benches, mulch, and beautify the city of Hoboken. It was a wonderful day — thanks to all who came out!

Quality Greens Kitchen to Open on Washington

Washington Street will soon boast a new healthy casual-fare restaurant. Quality Greens Kitchen is set to open at 227 Washington Street later this year. According to Linkedin, the eatery “is a start-up healthy fast-casual concept” that will have craft salads, quality meats, and creative vegetable dishes. According to Jersey Digsthe restaurant construction should be finished in about 10 weeks.

The 1st Annual Hoboken Dog Show Brings a Crowd

Hosted by The Walking Dog Pet Care, the 1st Annual Hoboken Dog Show took place yesterday under the 14th Street Viaduct and drew quite a crowd. All proceeds for the show went to pitbulls in need via New York Bully Crew. It was quite the adorable event — including a “dog” walk, judges, photobooth, and more. Can’t wait til next year!

Barbès Restaurant Opening Uptown

Jersey Digs recently reported that NYC-based eatery Barbès Restaurant is coming to 1300 Park Avenue this fall. The French-Moroccan style bistro, located at 36th and Madison Avenue in Murray Hill, has enlisted OLMK {the architects that recently designed Gogi Grill} to create the plans for their new location. Their menu features a variety of eclectic choices including tagine and couscous dishes as well as steaks, fish, and an array of appetizers.

NJ Devils’ Goaltender to do Autograph Signing for Liberty Humane Society

NJ Devils’ goalie Cory Schneider will participate in an autograph signing for the Liberty Humane Society on May 6th from 12:00 PM – 2:00PM at the shelter facility. Cory will sign one piece of memorabilia for each $20 donation made to the shelter. Cory and his wife, Jill, have been fostering animals for LHS for the past 3 years and Jill has been an active volunteer and dog-walker. The shelter is located at 235 Jersey City Blvd in Jersey City.

Hoboken Police Receive Emergency Response Truck

On January 1st the Hoboken Police Department launched their first-even Emergency Services Unit. This week, they received a delivery of an Emergency Response Truck through the use of the Local Law Enforcement Trust Fund. The $190,000 vehicle and equipment came at no cost to tax payers. According to the City, “the ESU Team is comprised of 11 tactical officers with extensive specialized training including active shooter response, rescue drills, firearms training, SWAT, and emergency medical responder school, as well as two crisis negotiators.” The vehicle has flood lights, medical equipment, basic fire suppression equipment, and high capacity weapons.

Hoboken Power Grid Redevelopment Approved

This week the Hoboken City Council approved plans for a $175 million PSE&G project to redevelop the city’s power grid. According to Hoboken Patch the project will combine the Marshall Street substation with the Madison Street substation in order to modernize the 50-year-old facilities. To do this, the city will engage in a land swap with PSE&G in which the city would transfer the lot next to the Madison Street station to PSE&G in exchange for the Marshall Street substation becoming property of the city. PSE&G will also pay $1.245 million to the city for the difference in appraisal values of the properties.

Napoli’s to Open Second Location in Downtown Hoboken

Pizza lovers rejoiced this week with the announcement that Napoli’s will open a second location in downtown Hoboken. According to Hoboken Happy HoursNapoli’s II will take over the former location of Grimaldi’s at 133 Clinton Street.  They are slated to open later this spring.
