A Cinderella March Madness Run

After winning the 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, Saint Peter’s in Jersey City earned a spot in the 2022 NCAA men’s basketball tournament. On March 17th, 2022, Number 15 seed Saint Peter’s University faced off against Number 2 seed Kentucky University in the first round. The Peacocks won 85-79 in overtime, upsetting the eight-time champion Wildcats and stunning the college basketball world.

But that was not the end of the university’s 2022 Cinderella March Madness run — in the second round, Saint Peter’s beat out the Murray State University Racers 70-60, knocking out another top 10 seed. The Sweet 16 round also proved to be successful for the Peacocks when the college beat out the Number 3 seed Purdue University Boilermakers, winning 67-64.

Saint Peter’s fell to the Number 8 seed University of North Carolina Tarheels in the Elite Eight round 49-69, but made history in the 2022 tournament by becoming the only 15th seed to make it to the Elite Eight. This was also the first time since 2000 that a team from New Jersey made it to the second weekend of March Madness. Saint Peter’s head coach, Shaheen Holloway, was a player for Seton Hall more than two decades ago, the last time a team from the Garden State advanced this far.

After a year hiatus, the Peacocks are back in March Madness for 2024, and are set to face the University of Tennessee  Volunteers.
