While April is flourishing in volunteer opportunities, there’s one event that’s coming up this week, that we wanted to draw some well-deserved attention to {that we’ll be attending!}: Stevens Institute of Technology’s 3rd annual Take Back The Night. Join the Stevens community and CarePoint Health as they raise awareness for sexual violence by participating in the walk from Stevens to Pier A, where a candlelight vigil and guest speakers + performances will follow. Here’s everything you need to know about the nation-wide event:

What is Take Back The Night?

While people have been partaking in Take Back The Night events since the ’70s, the nonprofit org was founded in 2001. Since then, colleges everywhere have hosted Take Back The Night events, to raise awareness for all types of sexual violence {this includes domestic violence, sexual abuse + rape, dating violence, etc.}, as well as try to defeat sexual violence entirely {events have even been held internationally!}. This year, SIT is holding it’s 3rd annual event for the cause, and we’re encouraging all of you to go out and support.

What’s the event like?

On Tuesday evening at 7 PM, participants will meet at Walker Field {entrance by 6th street}, where the acivities will commence. They will then walk from the campus to Pier A, for a ceremony featuring survivors, speakers, performances, + a candlelight vigil {that will follow the march, to honor victims of sexual violence}. Mayor Dawn Zimmer will be in attendance, as well as Stevens students who will be speaking and advocating for the cause. Additionally, the President’s Ensemble will be performing. The event is expected to conclude around 8:30 PM {rain date is Thursday, April 20th}. Read more about it here.

Who can attend?

Anyone! The entire Hoboken community is invited to attend — no RSVP required, no registration required. Bring your family, friends, coworkers, etc., because there can never be enough support {plus, it’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so it’s a great opportunity to come out and raise awareness for something that affects so many people}. It’s a fun way to get involved within the community, meet others who are just as passionate about ending sexual assault, and support an issue that’s near and dear to many of our hearts.

We’ll see you there! PS: The Hoboken Girl Helps team is meeting at 6:45PM at the 9th Street gates of Stevens pre-event. Email hobokengirlteam@gmail.com with any questions!

*FYI, the walk does contain steps, so if you have a stroller or a wheelchair, you can still attend and meet right at Pier A.

We hope to see you there!
