HG readers with a sweet tooth, get ready: Sugarsuckle {bakery} is just weeks away from the grand opening of its Hoboken storefront. Best known for one-of-a-kind desserts, Sugarsuckle specializes in cakes, cupcakes, specialty cookies, and desserts in a jar. The HG team had the opportunity to visit Sugarsuckle’s new space at 600 Newark Street in Hoboken this week — and lets just say that baked goods aren’t the only thing owner Jennifer Choi is skilled at decorating. Take a peek at the new brick-and-mortar dessert bakery space at Monday’s preview event below.

Take one look at the Sugarsuckle Instagram page, and it’s easy to see that owner Jennifer Choi has a knack for creating true works of art in the kitchen. If the desserts weren’t so tasty, we’d honestly be tempted to say that they are almost too beautiful to eat. Despite her immense natural talent, Jen stumbled across baking as a way to channel her creativity. What started as a way to pass time soon transformed into a “full-blown obsession” as Jen found herself spending hours looking at recipes books and sampling the new “it” desserts from the city’s famed bakeries {like the cronut}. Realizing that baking was more than just a hobby, Jen enrolled in culinary school to learn the fundamentals.  Following graduation, she started her professional career in a busy retail bakery and a Michelin-starred restaurant in NYC, but found herself wanting more creative freedom. Thus Sugarsuckle was born.

So aside from truly awesome designs, what makes Sugarsuckle unique? Sugarsuckle is proud to use only pure and authentic ingredients as the basis of their baked goods. Recipes are perfectly crafted to create a taste of “balanced sweetness” free from artificial extracts and imitations butter. In describing the aestetics of her work Jen shares, “Just as we strive to let delicate flavors hold their own special place on the palate, we truly embrace the ethos of “less is more” in our designs. We create desserts with a clean and modern finish, gathering inspiration from textiles, stationary, and florals.” And if you were to mistake “less as more” as boring minimalism, check out the truly stellar unicorn cake below.

Okay, now on to the fun stuff. Customized cakes are individually priced according to size, flavor, and complexity of design. Generally, each cake has four layers of cake that alternates with three layers of buttercream. Cake flavors include vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, and lemon. Buttercream fillings include classics such as vanilla bean and Callebaut chocolate as well as specialties such as salted caramel, cookies n’ cream, and green tea. Sugar cookies, dipped oreos, macarons, rice krispie treats, and cake pops round out the menu of custom products and inspiration for your next order can be found here.
