• Survival 101 for Water Main Breaks in Hoboken

UDPATE: Boil advisory lifted as of 3:15pm on Saturday 3/30!

You probably already knew this, but Hoboken has had 4 water main breaks this week. Kind of ridiculous – but true. The first one happened on Thursday AM, and 3 more happened after that. The most recent one was this Saturday morning at 8th and Jefferson in Hoboken, and it is quite the inconvenience to residents living in that area (no water all day for the apartments surrounding the break).

Additionally, there is a boil water advisory by United Water meaning that all Hoboken residents and businesses will have to boil their water for one minute when it comes to: drinking, cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets and all other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for the following activities: showering, washing dishes or clothes.

Here are a few things to help you survive the annoyances of Hoboken water main breaks as far as supplies go:

    1. Water bottlesalways a good thing to have on hand. Especially if you have pets!

    2. Baby wipesfor washing your hands before you eat. Don’t use the water to wash your hands because it isn’t sanitary.

    3. Pots For boiling water. Make sure to boil it for at LEAST one minute, and then allow it to cool in the pot before you put it in plastic. Heated plastic is carcinogenic.

    4. Don’t Park Your Car…anywhere.

    Exhibit A:

    5. Order Out. It makes it a lot easier than boiling your water and cooking, etc, etc. But make sure your restaurant is boiling their water!

    6. Check that Your Restaurant has Bottle Water & Fresh Ice. We went to the Clinton Social this morning for brunch, and I was pleasantly surprised that they were serving Fiji water with ice that was brought in from outside of Hoboken.

    7. Follow Hoboken Sinkhole on Twitter. Nom Nom Nom…he’s eating cars again. Maybe he should stick to dog poo.

    8. Don’t Stress. Life could be a lot worse…but these are definitely annoying problems at that. However, these sinkhole wannabes are kind of stressing me out.

A few sinkholes in the making…maybe these should get fixed on Jefferson Street? Just a thought.

Miss anything? What are some tips you have for water main breaks 101?
