In case you haven’t heard or read our weekly news update {it comes out Sunday mornings each week FYI}, the Mile Square is getting a brand new bar with speakeasy vibes. The Winston, filling the space that used to be Scotland Yard {72 Hudson Street in Hoboken}, is set to open in the next few weeks — adding a refreshing, much-welcomed outpost to the Hoboken bar scene. Instead of heading out to Jersey City or NYC for your fancy-cocktail adventures, we’ll now be able to find that same experience right here in Hoboken. We’re excited to announce they’re opening at 6:30PM to the public THIS Thursday, July 19th! Read on to see what all the fuss is about:

The Concept

The Winston, inspired by its namesake Winston Churchill, came to be when the ownership saw “an opportunity for something different in Hoboken,” says a rep for the new bar {who shared details exclusively with Hoboken Girl}. Owners and fellow Hoboken residents Tom Butler + Jon Sparacio found themselves leaving Hoboken to seek out their ideal spot for both cocktails and atmosphere. “We saw residents in need of an experience where they could enjoy incredible cocktails in a laid-back vibe. So many flocked to Jersey City for this (don’t get us wrong, we love Jersey City), but we felt Hoboken could use some love also.

The Winston will be Tom and Jon’s first venture within the industry, and they’re really working towards bringing “an NYC-cocktail-bar feel to Hoboken. Great cocktails with a fun experience will be the name of the game. Being Hoboken residents already, The Winston creators feel they know where the product and atmosphere should be adjusted to allow a relaxed and special ambiance. “The goal is to create a cocktail bar taking inspiration from Winston Churchill. It is exciting to bring this concept for the first time to Hoboken.”

The Space

The team behind The Winston had been looking for a location with tons of character {think: exposed brick and gorgeous wood} that would still allow them the flexibility to bring their speakeasy concept to life. The former Scotland Yard venue is the perfect combination of these two elements. The layout will be more of a “cocktail bar with speakeasy vibes” instead of the traditional speakeasy, and the design will be inspired by the 1940s. A sneak peek inside:

More on the Namesake + What to Expect

Naming the bar after the notorious Winston Churchill was very strategic. “While being a very smart and hardworking man in history, he also knew how to kick back and enjoy himself. His many famous quotes reflect that,” the rep explained.

The team at The Winston noted that they want patrons to feel that they are not only getting amazing cocktails, but also personal service. The owners shared, “Churchill famously said, ‘Attitude is a little thing that makes a BIG difference. Our mixologists are highly trained and will bring out the best in any flavor profile our guests are going for.” The Winston will offer a variety of beer and wine options, and cocktails will be mixed by head mixologist Hector Noel.

As far as the menu is concerned, expect cocktails-only at its opening, but light fare will later make its debut on the menu. The Winston will have a signature cocktail menu — along with unique Mules, Old Fashioneds, and the classics. They’ve released a couple of their signature cocktails that will be on the menu {as if we needed more reasons for wanting to give them a try ASAP}.

To get you excited — a peek at the new menu:

We can’t wait to welcome The Winston with open arms and are looking forward to seeing the space soon.

And on that note, we’ll leave you with some of Churchill’s most famous quotes:

If you’re going through hell, keep going.

History is written by the victors.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.

Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.

I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.
