Hurricane season is officially upon us, and Northern New Jersey is in for some wet weather this week. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch and a flood watch for over 17 New Jersey counties, including Hudson. This comes just a day after Hurricane Debby (which has now been demoted to Tropical Storm Debby) hit the coast of Florida on Monday, August 5th. Debby isn’t set to arrive in New Jersey until later this week, but excess moisture in the air will likely exacerbate today’s and tomorrow’s storms. Read on for what to know and how to prepare for the upcoming thunderstorms in New Jersey.
Tuesday + Wednesday
Hudson County and various other parts of New Jersey are currently under flood watch and severe thunderstorm watch, as issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). Per NJ.com, “the first batches of rain will be triggered by storm systems forming along a cold front that’s moving from the north and west, forecasters said, noting the front is expected to stall out near the Mid-Atlantic coast.” This means that these storms are separate from Debby, which currently looms over the Georgia coast, but “tropical moisture from Debby will interact with the stationary front in the Northeast and likely generate heavy rainfall,” according to the NWS.
As such, Hudson County residents should expect to see heavy rains, high winds, and possibly hail. Flash flooding is also a possibility on saturated streets and streets near rivers and streams. These conditions were predicted to start at 2PM today and last through Wednesday morning.
The City of Hoboken released a Nixle alert informing residents that City events and programs are canceled, but street cleaning will continue as scheduled. The City of Hoboken urges residents to “avoid flood-prone areas. Intense rainfall of greater than 0.8 inches per hour could result in flooding in low-lying areas.” You can read the full alert here.

The Deal with Debby
Hurricane Debby first arrived in the Big Bend region of Florida as a Category 1 Hurricane. The storm produced up to 80mph winds with up to five deaths, according to NBC News. Debby has since been downgraded to a Tropical Storm — which means wind speeds have gone down — and looms over South Carolina and Georgia. The two states currently face intense rainfall.
Per NJ.com, Debby is predicted to arrive in New Jersey by Saturday morning (August 10th). Accordingly, Debby will again downgrade to a Tropical Depression — which means even lower wind speeds — but significant rainfall is still in the forecast.
