“There are two kinds of people: Greeks, and everyone else who wish they were Greek.” (IYKYK).  Foodies, we have exciting news. Plaka Souvlaki, which locals may recognize from the 62 Newark Street location in Hoboken, has officially rebranded to Trós Greek Street Food and is opening a brand new location at 686 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City. Trós, which means “to eat” in Greek, (something we all love to do here in Hudson County) is opening its doors today, December 5th, 2024 in the McGinley Square neighborhood of Jersey City. Read on to learn more about Trós Greek Street Food and what to expect at the new Jersey City storefront.

The New Location

Trós took to Instagram on Tuesday, December 3rd to announce the grand opening of the restaurant’s third location at 686 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City. In addition to the new Jersey City location, Trós also has storefronts in Hoboken, 62 Newark Street, and Harrison, 811 Frank E Rodgers Boulevard South. Owner Nicholas Babalis shared with The Hoboken Girl that the new spot will still remain under the same ownership and continue to provide the same high-quality menu items as Plaka Souvlaki, just with a fresh new name. The new Jersey City location is officially open to the public on Thursday, December 5th, 2024.

About Trós

Owners, business partners, and cousins, Nicholas Babalis and Andrew Diamantopoulos have mastered the art of fast casual dining that doesn’t skimp on quality or freshness. Together they also are the founders of Black Diamond Hospitality group which owns Trós and the original Plaka Souvlaki. The two emphasize their passion of bringing authentic Greek eats and flavors to the community. Nick shared with HG that he has been in the restaurant and real estate business for “a good chunk of his life”. He is also the former owner of the Malibu Diner, which he closed in December 2021 to work on redeveloping the property for future endeavors. Co-owner Andrew also has a real estate and construction background which creates an aligned synergy between the two to continue their work in the hospitality space.

The restaurant uses a balance of locally sourced ingredients and specialty items imported directly from Greece. Meats at Trós are also held to the same high standard as they are never frozen and grilled fresh daily. Aside from dining in or grabbing a meal to-go, Trós also provides catering services with fresh salads, healthy sides, grilled meats, and other decadent spreads. Some popular menu stand-outs have to be the Chicken Souvlaki Pita Wrap which includes fresh skewer-grilled chicken, romaine, tomato, fries, and mustard sauce, or one of the Meat Platters. These platters include a base of white or brown rice, mixed greens or lemon fries, and a choice of various proteins (chicken, lamb, beef, salmon, and more) served with tasty spreads (like spicy feta, tzatziki, hummus, eggplant dip, and more), plus a slice of fresh pita bread. Trós also has some out-of-this-world traditional Greek bakery items such as Baklava, Tiropita, and Spanakopita.

Nick also shared with HG that customers can expect a completely revamped interior with a fresh, modern look.  The new store has been carefully designed and curated in a way that will better allow Trós to serve their customers along with a bigger back-of-house area to help prepare orders with ample space for large catering and more. The owners told HG that new seasonal menu items are underway along with more diverse catering options in the weeks to come that expand beyond just Greek food. And as always, Trós menu items will remain flexible for all to include gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, keto, and dairy-free options. The store will be open from 11AM to 10PM daily.
