Whether you remember the days when records were all the rage, you’re a ’90s kid who still pines for your Walkman, or are more into the hipster vinyl revival — you’re in luck. Tunes {located at 225 Washington Street in Hoboken} is a true Mile Square gem to all music lovers alike. If you haven’t checked it out yet {or are just as obsessed with it as we are}, read on to learn more about this spot:

History

The first Tunes store, Tunes on the Dunes, opened in Ocean City, NJ in 1989, and over the past almost 30 years, the beachside music shack has expanded to three unique locations {including the Hoboken shop}. Walking into the store {unfortunately one of the last free-standing music stores of its kind} is like crossing into an alternate dimension where CDs, records, and DVDs line the walls and fill cases upon cases, just waiting to be picked up and taken for a spin.

Tunes Hoboken

Upon walking into Tunes, you will almost certainly feel a rush of nostalgia and will be encouraged to browse and listen to old CDs and/or records until finding the perfect one to bring home. Their huge selection = it’s easy to get lost in music for hours. They have everything from Top 40 to obscure underground across every genre {and many new albums are also available in record form nowadays}. If searching for a specific album or need some suggestions for new music, definitely ask. The staff and the regular customers are friendly and always willing to help or make a recommendation. And if they don’t have what you’re looking for in-house, they are happy to order whatever it is.

Buying + Selling

The other half of Tunes’ business model is not in selling, but in buying — yes, Tunes will buy that old stack of CDs you have in a box collecting dust. According to Tunes’ website, they buy everything from CDs and records to DVDs and gaming systems/video games, plus other electronics and some musical instruments. Always be sure to call beforehand, especially if you’re not sure that they will buy certain items {before lugging it down to the store}.

Old Meets New

While Tunes primarily deals in physical music, they are aware of the digital music boom. As such, they cultivate monthly Spotify playlists which can be found on their Facebook page. Tunes also has an app which gives customers the ability to scan the barcode of {almost} any CD or record in the store, and then listen to a preview of the music straight from the app. This technology allows Tunes to marry old school and new school, the physical and the digital, for a unique shopping experience — and we love it!
