There are some great ways to give back in Hoboken — and a slew of philanthropic organizations in the Mile Square that are in dire need of your help. Volunteering just a few hours of your time can make such a difference — not only in the community, but for the lives of others {and yourself!} as well. Spread the love <3. Here’s our ever-growing list of Hoboken organizations that need volunteers.

Snap Fitness JC

Hoboken Family Alliance

The Hoboken Family Alliance is a volunteer-driven organization that helps Hoboken families connect with one another through family-oriented events and activities. Volunteers are needed by the alliance to help plan and organize community events, including Summer Food Drives, Backpack, Pajama + Toy Drives for those in need. Hoboken Historical Museum and Cultural Center 

The Hoboken Historical Museum and Cultural Center is a nonprofit organization supported by local fundraising, serving to further the understanding and exploration of Hoboken history, architecture, culture, and beyond. The museum preserves and collects cultural artifacts in addition to oral histories about the city and their effects on the world. The small staff of volunteers manages fundraising events that help to fund the museum’s educational exhibits. Volunteering includes event setup, registering participants, greeting visitors, selling merchandise, and more. Call 201-656-2240 for more information.

Hoboken University Medical Center 

There are tons of opportunities to volunteer your time at the Hoboken University Medical Center. Volunteers work to assist hospital professionals and are closely matched based on their preferences to assist in multiple areas of service, including patient services, at the information desk, the wound center, the medical library, thrift and gift shops, and beyond. Though challenging, this volunteer opportunity is far more rewarding and inspiring to others. Volunteers are required to be between the ages of 14-90 and must have a strong desire and commitment to help those in need. Hobbs Inc

The Hoboken Boys and Girls Club 

Helping out at the Boys and Girls Club for just a few hours a week can make a huge difference. Many kids are left to find their own recreational activities after school and on the weekends, and the Hoboken Boys and Girls Club works to steer them in the right direction. Volunteering your efforts can affect the life and future of a child. Volunteers with interests in athletics, the arts, technology, and any other special skills are always needed. The Hoboken Shelter 

The Hoboken Shelter serves the Hoboken community by providing meals to the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and supporting those in search of a home. Over 200 meals are served and over 50 people are housed on a daily basis, which requires volunteer help! Besides food and warmth, the shelter also provides case management, counseling, job training, workshops, and more. Volunteers are needed to serve dinner daily, lunch on Fridays, make and deliver resident sandwiches, sort clothing donations, and collect supplies. They also accept donations of food that you can drop off at 3rd and Bloom {where they’re located} at any time. Visit hobokenshelter.org for more information.  

Hoboken Division of Cultural Affairs

The Division of Cultural Affairs manages arts and cultural related projects in order to promote tourism in Hoboken. It provides free cultural programs including festivals, tours, and concerts in addition to opportunities for artists and students to present their work. Volunteers are always needed by the small Division of Cultural Affairs staff for prep work, tabling, event cleanup, and more. The Division of Cultural Affairs is located at Hoboken City Hall at 94 Washington Street and can be reached at 201-420-2207 or hoboculturalaffairs@gmail.com.  

AXIS School of Dance

The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps

The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps dedicates their efforts to providing pre-hospital care to the city of Hoboken free of charge. It is the last ALL-Volunteer Community Ambulance Service in Hudson county —meaning it’s vital to the community. The corps assists volunteers in gaining their CPR cards in addition to becoming EMT’s or certified First Responders. To apply to volunteer, email  info@hobokenems.com.  

Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse 

The Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse is a non-profit public boathouse in Hoboken set on the Hudson. The organization provides the community with free river access and free kayaking. The boathouse is always looking for fun-loving and dedicated volunteers to help {especially in the warmer months to come}! Both experienced and inexperienced kayakers are welcome to join {as volunteers and participants}. Volunteers will benefit not only from the satisfaction of a job well done, but also learning some kayaking skills! For more information, contact info@hobokencoveboathouse.org.

Hopes CAP

HOPES Community Action Partnership (HOPES) is a Non-Profit Agency established in 1964 that provides programs that respond to the social, educational, and training needs of the community. HOPES enables volunteers to have a stake in their community and make a positive impact in the lives of their neighbors — providing opportunities to volunteers in a variety of ways for the many programs and services the agency offers. Volunteers support HOPES with carrying out its mission through hands-on assistance or by sharing their knowledge and expertise. Volunteers can click here to learn more about the services needed.

Hudson County American Red Cross

At the American Red Cross in New Jersey, volunteers are invaluable to the daily operation, and they’re truly the heart and soul of the organization. To become a volunteer, follow these three simple steps: 1—Create a volunteer profile, 2—Attend a Red Cross Orientation, 3—Get Volunteer Training. You can find out all about that here.

Hudson County CASA

Hudson County Court Appointed Special Advocates {CASA} is a non-profit organization committed to advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA works through trained community volunteers to ensure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes. Liberty Humane Society

One of our furry friend favorites, the Liberty Humane Society is a local animal shelter in Jersey City. The site is dedicated to finding homes and caring for stray and unwanted animals. To donate supplies or money to the shelter, click here. As far as volunteering goes, volunteers help the shelter run smoothly, increase adoptions, and make the animals happier. Volunteering is critical to LHS’ success and they aim to make your experience as useful, pleasant, and rewarding as possible. Please note: volunteers must be at least 16 years of age!

Party With a Purpose

Following the attacks on 9/11, Scott Delea was inspired to make a difference in his own local community. Hoboken is known for its “work hard, play hard” lifestyle. But with a little organization, Delea felt that Hoboken could “give hard” too! Beginning with the first event in December 2002, PWP was born to meet the needs of both local charities as well as a community looking to get involved. The Jubilee Center

Drop off new, unwrapped toys to the Jubilee Center at 601 Jackson Street for girls ages 7-9 and boys 6-12. Toys are in high demand, but anything you can give will be appreciated. They are also in need of breakfast foods for the children they serve daily. You can stop by anytime Monday through Friday from 2:00PM-6:00PM. Can’t make that time slot? St. Matthew’s Trinity Lunchtime Ministry

St. Matthew Trinity Lunchtime Ministry is a soup kitchen/drop-in center for those who need assistance. It is located in the parish hall of St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church {57 8th Street, Hoboken}. They are always looking for volunteers and food donations, as they serve breakfast and lunch to 65 people daily Monday through Thursday from 8:00AM-12:00PM — and volunteers are needed at those times.
