A new Australian-themed coffee shop is coming to downtown Jersey City. The independently-owned cafe will make 88 Morgan Street its new home and is run by an Aussie himself: Sam de Burgh. de Burgh named the shop after a Bob Dylan song in which he croons “ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more.” Born in Perth Australia, de Burgh came to the States about eight years ago. This is his first business venture.

The Maggie’s Farm menu is pulled together by the Australian-born chef Paul Salmeri, who trained at Italy’s Apicius International Culinary School, and will change seasonally. Guests can expect avocado toast, seasonal paninis, and organic ingredients. Maggie’s is hoping to open by early October with daily hours from 6AM-4PM.

Hoboken Girl reported earlier that a brick-and-mortar Warby Parker was coming soon to Hoboken. We now have some insider intel that the Hoboken location will be at the former It’s Greek to Me space on Washington Street {538 Washington Street}. But in the meantime, the very first Warby Parker in the state of New Jersey launched this week at the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus.

“After much prepping and planning, we’re thrilled to announce that we’re opening our very first store in New Jersey tomorrow,” the official Warby Parker Instagram account wrote on Friday. “We’re excited to kick things off in Paramus at @gsplaza, then roll out stores in Westfield and Hoboken later this year.”

120-Room Morris Hotel Proposed for Jersey City

The Jersey City Redevelopment Agency {JCRA} has tapped Landmark Developers to begin development on the Morris Hotel, a 120-room hotel proposed for Communipaw Avenue in Jersey City. The hotel’s plans also call for a coffee shop and parking lot area. The designation for the development has been extended to December 30, 2018. The plans were originally proposed back in February. If built, the hotel would link Point Capital’s Baker Building and the Foundry. Click here for a current list of Jersey City hotels.

South Part of Van Leer Complex Renamed ‘The Enclave’

A development near the Hoboken/Jersey City border now has a new name: The Enclave. The southern portion of the Van Leer Complex, the newest upcoming addition to SoHo West, has earned the new name, though it was previously called Van Leer after the Van Leer Chocolate Company that used to occupy the site. The Enclave is a mixed-use development across the street from the Cast Iron Lofts. It will offer 260 units and is currently for lease.

Free Climber Scaled the Urby Building

Free climber Alex Honnold scaled halfway up the Urby Building in Jersey City earlier this week. Without harness or rope, Honnold, 33, climbed as high as the twenty-fourth floor. Honnold had actually discussed his plan to scale the building with the Urby’s developer, David Barry, who gave him permission to do so. Honnold told The New Yorker that he stopped at the 24th floor because he was “done feeling like a peeping tom,” looking through the windows of peoples’ apartments. Honnold also revealed that it was a conscious decision of Barry’s not to alert the residents of the building ahead of time, as to avoid pandemonium surrounding Honnold’s climb.

Old Las Olas Location Reopening as ‘Apulia’

The exterior of Apulia. Still a work in progress!

From Asian-Latin fusion to Southern Italian. The previous Las Olas location is reopening as a new restaurant called Apulia. Located at 1319 Washington Street, Apulia will offer authentic Italian restaurant food as well as wood-fired pizza. But the owners Frank Sciacca and his Uncle Franco warn potential visitors their pizza might be a bit different than what you might be accustomed to.

“Our pizza won’t be like regular American-Italian pizza,” Frank says, referencing the Acunto M. Napoli Wood-Fired oven on premises. “It’s the only one in the area that’s actually wood-fired,” he adds.

HUB Hoboken Closed During Investigation of Lewd Videos

hub hoboken

Downtown Hoboken bar The HUB has closed and will remain closed during the duration of Hoboken’s Alcohol Beverage Control Board’s pending investigation and hearing. The investigation comes after videos surfaced of patrons performing lewd acts during an event in conjunction with Kirill, known as The Slut Whisperer on Instagram. According to NBC 4 News, The HUB, located at 16 Hudson Place, closed its doors as of noon on Wednesday. Police officers were there for a brief time blocking the entrance.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla has called the graphic acts caught on camera, “an affront to human decency” and a “horrific objectification of women.” He also added that he is seeking the revocation of the bar’s license.

The HUB will stay closed until the ABC hearing comes to an agreement. The hearing was originally scheduled for September 20 but has since been rescheduled to October 25.
