Nestled in the recesses of popular ski destination – Windham Mountain {and surrounded by plenty of other Insta-worthy mountains such as Hunter, Belleayre and Plattekill}, the town of Windham offers a beautiful and relaxing getaway and is close enough to visit for a weekend trip — it’s only a 2 1/2 hour drive from the Hudson County area. Though most people think of this area as a place for skiing, it also offers a lot of fun recreation activities and fine dining during the spring and summer months as well {it’s just enough to make you feel like an outdoorsy person for the weekend}. Below are some recommendations for stay, play and drinks.

Lodging

Albergo Allegria Bed & Breakfast Hotel

This spacious B&B has 13 different rooms with a variety of lodging and amenities depending on your preference {if you can swing it, the master suite with the jacuzzi is well worth it}. Located on a sprawling property situated right next to the Windham hiking trail and within walking distance of a few of the restaurants in town, this B&B is perfect for a weekend away. Their fully stocked kitchen would make the Food Network jealous and is open for snacking 24/7 {check out their YouTube cooking channel!} and features nommie homemade treats and cakes every afternoon as well as at least five scrumptious breakfast choices in the morning. The B&B staff will even build an outdoor fire for you to sit by in the evening if you ask nicely {no, really}.

Catskill Lodge Bed & Breakfast

Hobbs Inc

Situated in a Queen Anne-style home, this B&B offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain scenery and is located close to the town center of Windham and local eateries. Offering access to local hiking paths such as Acra Point and Kaaterskill Falls as well as horseshoes, cornhole and bocce lawn games during the daytime, this cozy place is another excellent option for your stay. Don’t forget to check out the hot tub and the fire pit at nighttime. HG Tip: they even have a few rooms that pets can stay in as well, for an additional fee.

Local Eats

Mulligan’s Pub {Lunch}

This cozy bar and pub can be found right on the Windham Country Club golf course, so it has great views of the course as well as the mountains beyond. The pub features delicious and well-made local fare such as bacon-wrapped figs stuffed with feta {yes, you read that right} or a burger with their homemade mustard aioli sauce.

Chalet Fondue {Dinner}

AXIS School of Dance

Don’t let the name fool you; yes there is fondue here {champagne cheese fondue, in fact}, but there is also enough German fare here to make you feel like you just stepped into an Oktoberfest. Delicious homemade spaetzle along with amazing veal and chicken dishes {and some pretty amazing seafood specials} will leave you feeling insanely stuffed, although not so full that you can’t make room for some chocolate fondue {it’s just fruit and chocolate right?} or an ice cream sundae for dessert.

Drinks

Cave Mountain Brewing Company

Located in the heart of Windham, this brewery features a wide variety of their very own Cave Mountain beer {and flight options} as well as an ample array of local beers, ciders and mixed drinks. The menu ranges from mouthwatering burgers and sandwiches to tacos and root “beer” floats {get it?} for a fun afternoon hangout.

Ze Windham Wine Bar

This adorable wine bar in Windham evokes a “fancy tea party” feel, decorated with quaint couches and glass coffee tables where you can relax and enjoy some late afternoon snacks while choosing from their extensive wine list including a variety of whites, reds, and bubbly blushes. Check out the awesome cheese plate or charcuterie board to complement your bevvies.

Local Attractions

For hiking, check out the Acra Point trail for more of a challenge as well as the Kaaterskill Falls — or the Windham path for an easier hike. Mountain Top Arboretum in nearby Tannersville and Opus 40 sculpture park in Saugerties also offer more hiking as well as some beautiful views of the local foliage.

Travel Tips

  • Mid-April to mid-May is considered off-season for this area and a lot of restaurants and attractions will be closed, so make sure you are going to visit once things re-open for the summer months.
  • Bring your hiking gear. No matter how much hiking you are planning on doing big or small, there are tons of paths all around the area to check out.
  • Since you are up in the mountains it does tend to get chilly at night, so make sure to bring a cardi or two {or three}.
  • For a halfway point stop on the way home, we recommend Keegan Ales in Kingston — great beer and great food, with an outdoor patio deck!
