Rebuild by Design Waterfront Discussions Underway

Harborside Sport + Spine

When the State of NJ won the 2013 Rebuild By Design competition on the summer of 2013, it guaranteed our city , along with Weehawken and Jersey city, $230 million in funding to create a plan that improves the physical, ecological, economic, and social resilience of our community. Multiple plans to protect and preserve our waterfront and were discussed in recent weeks at drop-in town hall sessions. The topic has been the cause of much debate as some plans to protect the waterfront would also block access to the river. Mayor Zimmer released a statement stressing that the city understands the need and value in preserving the beauty of the waterfront but also needs to take precautions to keep Hoboken safe from ever again experiencing the type of devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy.

Jersey City Ranked on Worst Places to Celebrate NYE List

Jersey City

Wallethub.com put together a list of the best and worst places to celebrate New Year’s Eve.  They compared the 100 most populated cities in the country by taking into account key factors from three different categories- Entertainment & Food, Costs, and Safety & Accessibility.  Some key factors included number of restaurants per 100,000 people, the amount of NYE parties held, average NYE party ticket price, price of beverages, and crime rate. Now, we may be a Hoboken-centered blog, but we have to stick up for our sister-city Jersey City and say we disagree with this ranking.  We think celebrating New Year’s Eve on this side of the Hudson makes for a ton of fun.  Don’t worry JC- we’ve got your back! 🙂

We know this happened a few weeks ago, but just had to mention that Frankie and Ava’s Italian Eatery is officially open at 208 Washington Street.  Their menu features a variety of Italian favorites from antipasto platters to pasta and pizza options. We haven’t gotten the chance to stop in for a taste yet, but our friends at HMag recently wrote about their visit. Based on their picture of the Maximum sandwhich, a trip to Frankie and Ava’s is high on our to-do list. Stop in and welcome them to the neighborhood!

Santacon Held in Hoboken

^thanks to our friends at Hoboken Happy Hours for this pic of Santas waiting in line to get into 1 Republik

Yesterday, hundreds of bar-goers, decked out in holiday-gear, joined in on Hoboken’s Santa-con. Hoboken was swarming with people dressed as Santa, Mrs. Claus, their elves, and reindeer as they waited to get into Hoboken’s bars. Lines were wrapped around the corner on the coldest day we’ve had this December. Some participants took to Facebook to complain about having to pay cover charges to get into some bars despite paying $30 for a ticket to the sold-out event. Either way, it seemed that most of the Santas enjoyed themselves.

Hoboken Celebrates the 100th Birthday of Ol’ Blue Eyes

On December 12th, Hoboken celebrated what would have been the 100th birthday of arguably our most famous resident, Frank Sinatra. The Hoboken Historical Museum honored the late singer by mounting a bronze star with his name at the entrance to the museum. The Hoboken Public Library hosted a Sinatra movie marathon and displayed a collection of Sinatra memorabilia. Del Frisco’s featured a special Sinatra cocktail and Blue Eyes created a pri-fixe menu to celebrate the man that inspired their name. The celebrations helped round out the year-long centennial events that have been hosted around town.

Hoboken Police Warn of Package Theft Hoboken

HPD_Logo_Color

We hate reporting on stories like this, but unfortunately it’s true. Hoboken Police have issued statements heeding residents to protect their holiday packages after multiple thefts occurred. Police recommend some key tips to keep in mind- good to know for the last minute packages that come in throughout these next few days. Here they are:

  • Do not let anyone who rings the bell inside the building without first confirming who the person is.
  • Any resident who is entering the buildings should not let anyone else inside who is not a resident of that building.
  • There should be an arrangement made with the delivery services such as UPS or Fed-ex to have the packages left in a secured area only accessible to the tenants or management.
  • Tenants should speak with management or landlords about properly securing all access doors to the building.
  • If there is anyone wandering inside or outside the property and the tenant is not familiar with them, immediately notify the police department. Do not confront the individual or anyone who may be with them.

Warm Weather Expected for Christmas in Hoboken

Screen Shot 2015-12-19 at 7.30.47 PM

December has been {unseasonably} warm and this week won’t be an exception. Forecasts show Christmas even getting into the upper 60s and Christmas day in the high 50s. And while we’ve enjoyed the light jackets instead of winter coats, we’re also a little disappointed that there’s not even a hint of a white Christmas.
