Though Hoboken is swarming with amazing places to eat, one thing we don’t see much of is traditional barbeque food. All of that will change when House of ‘Que opens at 340 Sinatra Drive in the coming weeks. The Austin-style BBQ joint will feature cafeteria style service, live music, communal seating, and much more under the careful watch of Texas pitmaster Mike Rodriquez. Stay tuned for info on their opening!

The City of Hoboken has allocated $332,674 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to making structural improvements to the Hoboken Homeless Shelter. According to a press release from the City, the improvements will include the installation of an emergency generator system, renovating showers and restrooms, rebuilding and expanding the HVAC system, installing a water sprinkler fire suppression system, upgrading and repairing sewerage and drainage systems, replacing the kitchen exhaust fan system, resurfacing floors, and rebuilding window frames to enhance energy efficiency. The shelter is one of only three available in all of Hudson county and is the only one that offers daily meals. The shelter serves 500 meals per day and can accommodate 50 people nightly. These much needed improvements will be extremely beneficial to the homeless and working poor who rely on the shelter. For information about volunteer opportunities please click here.

Buddha Press Closes

We don’t have many details on the reason, but we have heard from good sources that Buddha Press has closed its doors for good. The all-organic juice bar and raw food spot seemed to be a great addition to the healthy food trend coming to town. We’re pretty bummed to see them go.

Trader Joe’s Rumors Continue to Build

Rumors that Trader Joe’s is coming to Hoboken have been circulating for years. This summer, it seemed those rumors were moving closer to being confirmed when the grocery store’s name was found in a filing with the city. NJ.com has now recently announced in a recent store, that architectural plans or the new building at Willow and 14th street include a design for a Trader Joe’s. Our hopes are definitely high that this will be true!

The Hudson Bike Share program has officially launched in Hoboken. The “nextbikes” differ from the Citi Bike program seen in Manhattan in that these bikes don’t require a docking station to be locked up. The built in lock program allows the bike to be docked anywhere in the city. A mobile app is available to make the bikes easy to access and use. A single 30 minute trip is $2. A 7-Day unlimited access pass is 25 dollars. Or, users can pay $95 for an annual membership, giving unlimited rides throughout the year.

Hoboken Ranked in Top 10 “Drunkest” Places in NJ

Marty O-Briens

In a list of Drunkest Towns in NJ created by RoadSnacks.net, Hoboken ranks number 9. The list was created based on the number of bars, wineries, and liquor stores per capita; the city’s drunk related tweets within the last week; and the local divorce rate. We had the 5th highest rate of  bars per capita and 12th highest rate of liquor stores per capita in the state. However, the divorce rate in Hoboken was only 5.6%, significantly lower than the 10-12% of other places on the list.
